Hi everyone
Why does all the information on methotrexate tell you to contact your doctor immediately if you have a sore throat!!!!
Do I need to be concerned that I have one?
Thanks

Hi Sue It's because your immune system is compromised and you will not be able to fight the throat infection, basically! If it's just an everyday sort of sore throat I wouldn't worry too much as it will clear on its own given time. If however it is bad enough for you to be concerned it may be necessary to stop the MTX to give the infection time to clear. I must admit I find this difficult to understand as when I was taken off MTX last year it took about 3 months to get it out of my system!! Stopping MTX for a week, I wouldn't have thought would make that much difference! Same applies to anti-tnf drugs! If your throat is really bad do get in touch with your GP for some advice. Better to be safe than sorry and have to put up with an infection week after week which may quickly spread elsewhere. Hope you feel better soon, Lyn x

Hi Sue
I've had several sore throats and completely lost my voice in the last few months. Each time, I've been given antibiotics and it's cleared up although there's no knowing if it was just a coincidence!
My GP always errs on the side of caution, preferring to treat infections because of my compromised immune system.
Hope your throat gets better soon.

Hi Thanks for the advise, the sore throat has now turned into a cold so will go with it and leave off the methotrexate this week. I really appreciate all the helpful comments and advise on this site. Thank you to you all

Hi Sue, I have recently had a sore throat and lost my voice, It was sore until my voice went, I had no voice for about 4 days before it started to return. I did not take my MTX that week and I called the doctor but he said I did not need antibiotics unless it got much worse. It will run its course then you will feel better. Take plenty hot fresh orange and honey drinks, I find this so good when I am unwell. Do take care and look after yourself. Lorna x

I've been experiencing a sore throat most mornings, nothing serious and it does seem to wear off as the day progresses. I did ask my specialist nurse about it because I am now taking MTX but beings it wasn't really sore she said I was OK. She did say though, that if MTX was lowering your immune system too much a nasty sore throat would be the first sign.

Hi Sue I seem to get one sore throat after another. Doc said because of Mtx i have a low imune system. I dont bother going to docs unless it gets really bad. Last one i had i missed MTX for a week , it usually only lasts a few days unless it turns in to a cold . Hope you feel better soon. Kathleen Mc.

I am in two minds whether to mention this because of the cost, but I have found something which is wonderful for sore throats - Manuka Honey. It comes from specially bred bees in the Manuka region of New Zealand and has antibacterial properties. Problem is it costs about £14 a jar - so I keep it solely for sore throats. However, it's also wonderful for burns and seems to stop infection.
